Barack Obama on Abortion

Since the historic Roe v. Wade case of more than thirty years ago the case of abortion has been one that has been on top of women’s rights. In fact, many people believe that when Supreme Court judges are appointed the first thing asked of them involves what they would do with that case. Abortion is a very touchy topic among others, and this is a major case in the presidential election. The opinions of Barack Obama on abortion are far different from what John McCain feels.

First, Obama is a supporter of current abortion laws. The laws he supports are the ones that have been added to the Constitution. His views for women’s rights are the opposite of what McCain feels in that McCain is opposed to abortion. Also, Obama does not have any limits as to when abortions can or cannot take place. Meanwhile, McCain feels that abortions should be legal only when the pregnancy is from incest or rape or in the event that childbirth would greatly endanger the woman’s life.

Also, Obama does agree to allow for abortions but unlike McCain he will allow late term abortions. This is a type of abortion that takes place during the later part of the woman’s pregnancy. The reason why Obama supports this is because there are concerns about the health of the woman during an abortion at this point in her pregnancy. The woman is more likely to die during a late term abortion procedure, and as a result Obama does not want to oppose these abortions. In fact, while in the Illinois Senate Obama voted against a law that would have banned late term abortions.

What’s more to this case involves the ability of a woman to make her own decisions in a time when she is considering an abortion. Obama believes that a woman should be able to make her own decision as to whether or not she should get an abortion if she ever considers this. He also believes that her decision should involve the support and counseling of her family, her clergy and doctors.

Obama has not discussed publicly about whether or not he would be supportive of funding for organizations that work to promote abortions. This is an essential factor in that McCain has stated that he is opposed to the use of funds for groups that promote and perform abortions.

The views of Barack Obama on abortion are essential to the upcoming election. These views on women’s rights that Obama has are ones that support a woman’s right to choose. He also feels that while he does allow for abortions the woman who is pregnant should be the final judge as to whether or not she should have an abortion.
